Satinay trees (Syncarpia hillii) are the most famous trees growing
on Fraser Island. They have a small distribution of Fraser Island
and the National Park of Cooloola just south of there. They grow
up to 50 metres high and 4 metres wide.
The green colour comes from chlorophyll, which is used by the plant
to convert sunlight and CO2 into energy. When this is absent, the
leaves go differing colours based on the chemicals within them.
They lose their gloss within a few hours of being collected.
